400EAST Club “BEACON OF LIGHT”
Chicago, IL
Energy Efficiency I Kinetic + LED + Fiber Optics Lighting
When constructed in 1963, Outer Drive East Tower on the Chicago lakefront was the pioneer of urban living together with the rising Marina City. The building was remembered for its particular location on the S curve on Lake Shore Drive (the Outer Drive). Its Buckminster Fuller inspired geodesic glass dome covering the swimming pool served in movie sets over the years.
For the pool space renovation, RADA Architects used kinetic LED lights turning the dome into a beacon of light in the Millennium Park neighborhood. A fiber optic accent light runs the entire perimeter of the pool accenting its unique shape. New landscaping, pool furniture and a large green canopy umbrella in the center of the pool deck – have anchored now the space which has become a favorite spot for residents and guests.
Sustainable Design / Energy Reduction:
Use of LED lighting (90%)
Use of fiber optics (10%)
Recycled materials and furniture
Key Design Issues:
Creating Identity and sense of place
Creating openness and connections
Breathing new life into existing space
